The First Stitch: My Life in Australia's Textile, Clothing and Footwear Industry.

Join us for a “behind the seams” look into the lives of the women who make our clothes in the local textile, clothing and footwear industry.

Globally and locally, the textile, clothing and footwear (TCF) industry is deeply gendered, with approximately 77% of the Australian TCF workforce identifying as female. It’s a space where you will find extraordinary women everywhere you look – from the highly skilled sewing technicians on the factory floor to innovative entrepreneurs running their own businesses. It is also an industry in which women are overrepresented in issues including poor working conditions, exploitation and unequal pay.

For nearly 25 years, Ethical Clothing Australia has existed to protect the rights of workers in the local TCF industry. A not-for-profit, multi-stakeholder initiative spanning business-industry and union, their on-the-ground accreditation program and audit, covering design to dispatch, centres the voices and experiences of workers to ensure they are protected and respected while elevating businesses who are committed to ethical business practices.

This year, recognising the gendered nature of the industry, Ethical Clothing Australia launched the Victorian Women’s Leadership Network which is an industry first in Australia. The Network offers women engaged with Ethical Clothing Australia – either as an accredited business, union representative or outworker – support, connection and opportunities for mentorship and professional growth.

For this very special event, Generation Women Australia is proud to partner with Ethical Clothing Australia for a night of storytelling and connection. The storytellers will reflect the diverse, vibrant community of women working in and for the local TCF industry who will share their experience and stories in their own words.

This is a night not to be missed, as we hear about the strength and resilience of the wonderful women who bring our garments to life.
