Generation Women Sydney - ‘Meet Cute: Stories of First Encounters with the People We Love’

  • Generation Women Sydney 354 Bourke Street Surry Hills, NSW, 2010 Australia (map)

Get ready to swoon and giggle as our storytellers share their ‘meet cutes’ — those serendipitous, sometimes awkward moments that sparked new relationships. From romantic fumbles and instant friendships to hilarious first impressions, these tales remind us that love often comes wrapped in laughter. Come for the feels, stay for the heart-fluttering moments that remind us why first encounters matter.

Our performer line-up:

Team 20s: Lauren Elloise is a lesbian YouTube creator who has spent the last 9 years making videos for young LGBTQ+ people and documenting her same-sex relationship. Lauren is also an ambassador for Wear It Purple, and works as a user experience designer in the tech industry.

Team 30s: Dr Ashna Basu is an award-winning doctor, speaker and global advocate for gender equity. She works in Sydney’s public hospital psychiatry system. Earlier this year she spoke at a UN Women panel during the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women at the invitation of the President of the General Assembly.

Team 40s: Yemi Penn is a thought leader, documentarian and PhD candidate transforming cultural trauma. Known for empowering diverse audiences, she uses play and strategic storytelling to drive cultural change, fostering graceful and courageous feminism, advocating for healing, equitable and authentic, systemic transformation while staying rebelliously curious.

Team 50s: Joanne Fedler is an internationally bestselling author and writing mentor. She has a master’s degree in law from Yale and was a women’s rights advocate in South Africa before immigrating to Australia. Her book Things Without A Name has been optioned for the screen. The Whale’s Last Song is her fifteenth book.

Team 60s: Vivi Martin came from Tasmania to Sydney aged 21, working the kiosks of Central Station. After meeting a cute Sicilian didgeridoo player, she had two children, who she raised mainly as a single parent.   Vivi was propelled by other women to go to Uni, leading to her community work with diverse families raising young children.

Team 70s: Dee Molineux is a former production designer with a 40-year career in film and television where she designed sets for hundreds of TV commercials and several films. She ran an eclectic homewares store in Balmain — lashings of colour and drama, and full of treasures and objects she repurposed. The first girl in Queensland to buy a surfboard, she’s lived many lives: mod, beatnik, hippie and mother of five. Now a grandmother of eleven, she enjoys family, travel and a good TV binge.

Generation Women is an award-winning cross-generational storytelling night founded in New York in 2017, Sydney in 2018 and Melbourne in 2020. Each month, six women of note read an original piece on a theme. Of those, one is in her 20s, her 30s, her 40s, her 50s, her 60s and her 70s+.

This event is proudly presented by Generation Women Australia, founded by Donna Logue. The event will be hosted by Jen Ward. Generation Women was created by Georgia Clark.
